Border Battle Cup Hockey begins in Poonch

POONCH, February 21: Organised by  the Indian Army under Operation Sadbhavna, the Border Battle Hockey Cup got underway at Astroturf Stadium, here.

The organisers have confirmed entries from 14 teams, including those from outside J&K so as to make it a National level event at the border district, a handout issued here today informed.

The week-long event shall conclude on February 27 with the holding of scheduled final, followed by the valedictory function.

Earlier, in the preliminary round of the competition, Poonch Stadium XI blanked Kashmir Hockey Academy 5-0. Amanjeet Singh and Mandeep Singh scored two goals each while other goal came through Jagmeet Singh. For his brilliant show, Mandeep was named player of the match.

In other scheduled match of the day, Jammu Stadium XI trounced Sujanpur Hockey Club 3-2. Saksham made hat trick to be adjudged player of the match.

The teams interacted with district (DYSS) officer, Mohd Qasim, who was chief guest. Among others present were Narjeet Singh, Narinder Singh (ZPEO), Sanjeev Sharma, Pawan Kumar, Gurmeet Singh, Vishal Sharma and Jasbir Singh.

The technical penal comprised Mukesh Kumar, Rajinder Singh, Harmeek Singh, Jagjeet Singh, Amarjeet Singh, Gurdev Singh, Ruchika Sharma, Sunil Raina, Shokat Ahmed and Ritika Sharma.
